A Pursuit

This past summer I became quick friends with a fellow islander, angler and Seeker of the Freedom of the Water. Nick Kelley recently departed the U.S. for South America for an adventure of culture, nature and fishing.  

I encourage you all to follow along on his blog and enjoy his great writing, photography and fishing tales.  As you all know, itineraries for adventures rarely follow their first draft, but you can see Nick and his road companion Zach's rough plan below:

Oct. 14th - Fly from Denver to Guayaquil, Ecuador
Oct. 14th - Nov. 1st - West Coast of Ecuador near Machalilla National Park followed by a week in Cuenca - fishing and exploring Cajas National Park
Nov. 1st - Fly from Guayaquil, Ecuador to Caracas, Venezuela 
Nov. 1st - 8th - Saltwater Fly Fishing Los Roques, Venezuela  - (Zach’s butt tattoo of a Permit, pending actually catching a Permit)
Nov. 8th - Fly from Caracas, Venezuela to Lima, Peru 
Nov. 8th - Nov. 27th - Lima, Peru to San Martin de los Andes, Argentina via bus (5,000km in 21 days!!)
Nov. 30th - Dec. 21st - Volunteer program at Conservacion Patagonica - http://www.conservacionpatagonica.org
Dec. 22nd - Return to San Martin de los Andes for Christmas with family and friends
Jan. 8th - Jan. 22nd - Exploring and mountaineering in Southern Patagonia near Cochrane, Chile
January through March - We will be based out of San Martin de los Andes exploring the region in every direction

Here's a great post of dozens of good steelhead flies on The Caddis Fly, an Oregon blog. It has the recipe, an instructional video and a photo of the final fly. Sweet.

Waters Westward

Tomorrow morning, newly-inducted-honorary BFCa member, fellow Mainer and man of the road, Lucas Young will depart for the Southern Hemisphere and The Land of the Long White Cloud with a one-way ticket. Lucas and I spent a little over two months on the road down under last winter and he's going back for more.

Just figured I would let those of you who have not received my millions of facebook messages know that a buddy of mine and I just launched a website called addversus.com. The site is designed to allow people to create advertisements for companies and allow companies to creatively access effective and economic advertising. We have a few projects up there right now, and we are just asking people for help to get the ball rolling. So we would be very grateful to have you guys sign up and set up a profile on the website! Greetings BFC!

My travels around the South Island of New Zealand has put me in the company of two fine, fishy fellow from Denver, Chris and Kris. It appears that they're up to pretty much the exact same thing as I am, traveling and fishing.

Kayak Fishing For Bluefin

Edwards Dam, 10 Years Gone

On July 1st, 1999, Edwards Dam in Augusta, Maine was removed, opening up miles of river for anadromous fish. The removal was an incredible event for the river, the state and the country, as after years of debate, it was finally decided that removal of the dam would yield greater benefits than the continued power production. The dam was ordered removed by the federal government. This was the first (and only, to date) time such a decision was made. These benefits - especially those related to the greatly improved fishery, water quality and wilderness surrounding the river - are ones that I and many others in the Solid Hookups community have enjoyed and will continue to enjoy, first hand, for the rest of our lives.
